Did you know that regular glitter is made up of tiny little bits of microplastic and will take hundreds of years to breakdown?

Until a few years ago, the thought had never even crossed my mind. I don't know what I thought glitter was made of, but I certainly didn't worry about how much damage it was doing to the environment.

So what's the problem with glitter? Well, glitter is essentially a microplastic meaning that it's made up of tiny little plastic fragments that subsequently end up in our oceans. Since the pieces are so small, they are often mistaken for food by the animals that live there and can end up in the food chain. So if you're someone who consumes seafood then there's a good chance you're ingesting plastic too. A University in Belgium calculated that people eat up to 11,000 plastic fragments in their seafood each year.

In fact things have got so bad that some scientists have even been calling on a ban on glitter.

However, there are some plastic free solutions for those of us who still want to enjoy glitter. Since it's festival season, I've been looking for a zero waste alternative so I can cover my face in glitter when I head to a festival in a couple of weeks (FYI - it's a rock festival, but it's the only one I'm going to so I will be wearing my pink glitter on my face whether anyone likes it or not).

Eco Glitter is a sustainable sourced compostable glitter that is also cruelty free and vegan friendly. There are so many colours and mixes to pick from and you can also buy a tin of aloe vera gel to help you apply it. It comes packaged in a cardboard box and wrapped in newspaper, so the packaging is zero waste too.

If you're looking for glitter then I couldn't recommend it enough. Remember "do what is right, not what is easy".Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100548430195629126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665773189682253005.post-5628054012382690362018-07-16T10:05:00.000-07:002018-07-16T12:50:19.973-07:00Vegan Banana Bread // Plastic Free JulyBanana bread is one of those great cakes that you can make with ingredients from your cupboard and now I can bulk buy vegan chocolate chips, the recipe is zero waste too. It's also a great way to use up any bananas that are too ripe too eat so you don't end up with food waste.

I made this cake last night and as you can see from the photo I've already eaten about a third of it which can only be a sign that it tastes good. It's really quick and easy to make and you don't need any fancy food processors or equipment.

What ingredients do I need?

3 ripe bananas

1/4 cup of non-dairy milk (I used almond, but anything will work)

1 tsp of apple cider vinegar

1/3 cup maple syrup

1/4 cup coconut oil

1 tbsp vanilla extract

2 cups wholewheat flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp allspice

sprinkle of salt

1/2 cup of vegan chocolate chips (feel free to add more if you like it really chocolatey)

1/4 cup of non-dairy butter

Sweet sauce or spread of your choice for a topping (I used my favourite Cashew Caramello one from Almighty Foods)

How do I make it?

Set the oven to 180 degree

Mix the apple cider vinegar and non-dairy milk in a small bowl and put to the side.

Mash the bananas in a large bowl.

Add maple syrup, coconut oil and vanilla extract to the bowl with the banana and mix together.

Add the small bowl of milk/ACV to the banana mixture.

Sift in the flour and add the baking powder, spices and salt.

Fold the mixture together (but try not to over mix).

Add the chocolate chips and fold in (again, don't over mix it)

Line the baking tin with butter

Add the mixture to the tin and place in the oven

The banana bread should take approximately an hour to bake. I'd recommend checking around 50 minutes mark just to make sure it's not burning (as all ovens are different).

Remove the cake from the baking tin and add topping when cool.

Happy baking!! Let me know in the comments if there's any zero waste cakes that you enjoy making.

I hope that you're all enjoying the challenge of trying to cut ditch single-use plastics and look for zero waste alternatives.

Of all the rooms in my flat, my bathroom is definitely the most zero waste. It was the first area of my life that I really tackled, and I'm proud that it's a plastic free zone. So I thought I would share the products I use to inspire you to make some plastic free swaps this month.

(Left to Right)

1. Natural shampoo bar - I've recently made the switch from a Lush shampoo bar (I'll blog more about this later) and I'm still in the transition stage. My hair felt oily the first few times I used it, but it seems to be settling down now which was just a sign of old residue build up from years of using shampoo full of unnatural ingredients. There's lots of natural shampoo on the market, but the one I'm using just now is from Zero Waste Path Shop and I really like it.

2. Face soap - I was actually gifted this facial soap bar a few months ago from Lush when I was in one of their shops promoting my work's mountain hare campaign (you can read about the campaign here) and it's been amazing so far. It leaves my face really smooth and it always feels very clean too. And judging my how small it is in this picture, I'll need to buy a new one again soon.

3. Nail clippers

4. Apple cider vinegar rinse - To combat the transition to a natural shampoo bar, I'm using this apple cider vinegar rinse as a conditioner to help with the build up of old hair products that are still lingering in my hair. It's just a mix of water and ACV and it's been leaving my hair feeling really soft.

5. Safety razor - I've been using my safety razor for a while now, and did a first impressions video on it here if you're interested. It works really well for me just now, but I am still scared I'll cut myself whenever I use it. However, it's a million times better than using plastic disposable razors which are really harmful to the environment.

6. Bamboo toothbrush - I ditched plastic toothbrushes last year, and have been using a humble bamboo brush ever since. I've not had any problems with my teeth since I switched over, and I love the fact the company helps children who can't access dental care too. I've really enjoyed moving to a zero waste lifestyle and finding new companies to support, especially ones doing such good things.

7. Toothpaste - I make my toothpaste with coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint oil and it honestly leaves my teeth feeling cleaner than they did when I used normal toothpaste. I can buy zero waste versions of all the ingredients so it cuts out the regular plastic toothpaste tubes that you can't recycle.

8. Body soap - I was gifted this by Lush when I got my face soap but I can't find a link on their website or the name of it. I used to get through so much shower gel, but now I only use soap and I have now become a little obsessed with all the different soaps I want to try.

Well The New Leaf Co-op has all your zero waste needs.

I discovered this shop last year, and these days I can often be found there scooping chickpeas into jars and looking at all the shelves of spices.

The store is open from Monday to Saturday and is the best place in Edinburgh to buy in bulk. The shop sells loose fruit and veg, bread without packaging, and lots of bulk foods including grains, pulses, pasta, spices, herbs, dried fruit, cleaning products, and they have a nut butter machine!!
The staff will happily weigh all your jars and containers for you, but there's also paper bags in the shop if you don't have your own. You can also take your own washing up bottles and fill them with washing up liquid,

I still had a quite a bit of food in my cupboard so I only needed a few things when I popped in at the weekend.

I picked up some chickpeas, vegan chocolate drops, organic apricots, exotic muesli, and rice. I was really excited to find the vegan chocolate drops cause finding vegan chocolate in bulk is not something that happens every day. Plus, it tastes delicious!

If you're in Edinburgh then you should definitely take a visit to The New Leaf Co-op. Remember you don't need any fancy jars or anything. I used a katsu curry sauce jar to fill with apricots and my boyfriend's takeaway container to fill with rice.

This is Edinburgh's biggest bulk buy store, but I'll be blogging about other places in the city you can do some zero waste shopping in the coming months. If you have any suggestions, then please let me know in the comments.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100548430195629126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665773189682253005.post-80818799331605370182018-06-11T12:33:00.001-07:002018-06-13T12:29:22.294-07:00Zero Waste Mascara

My makeup bag is probably one of the areas of my life that isn't very zero waste. If you know me well then you'll know I don't wear much makeup anyway, but one of my must-have items is mascara. I was previously using drugstore mascara which came in a plastic bottle, but since it ran out a few weeks ago, I decided it was time to find a zero waste alternative.

I found Beauty With Roots for Etsy and it arrived two weeks ago. The mascara itself is comes in a small glass jar with an aluminium lid. Not only is it zero waste, but this particular one is completely vegan and organic too. It uses lots traditional herbs, so it's a lot better to be using near your eyes than all the chemicals that are used in high street mascaras.

It goes on really well and lasts all day so I definitely have no complaints about how it looks on, but it can be a little tricky to get it out of the jar. If you stick the whole mascara brush in (note: this doesn't come with the mascara) then you'll end up with lots on the brush that will go to waste since your not putting the brush back into the bottle like you would normally.

However, you can stick the tip of the brush in the pot to put on your lashes and then use the whole wand to brush it through then it works fine. I just takes a couple of tries to get used to it, especially if you've been buying mascara in a standard shop bought bottle for years.

Overall, it's been a great product so far and I'd definitely recommend it. I'll be blogging about the rest of my zero waste makeup swaps in the coming months, so stay tuned!
A few weeks ago, I finally finished my last plastic razor so I took the plunge and bought myself a safety razor.

I did a little bit of research and decided to go for the Edwin Jagger DE89L which you can purchase from Amazon here and enough razors to last me a lifetime from Astra here. The best bit about Astra is that the blades come in a cardboard box with the blades wrapped in paper. It might have been more expensive that disposable razors, but that's the last time I will need to purchase any hair removal products for the rest of my life.

I'm still getting used to using the razor d taking it slow, but so far it's been a success!

Watch the video below for my first impressions and I'll be sure to update you as I carry on using it.

Say hello to my new venture into the world of social media!

I've dabbled with YouTube before, but I've never really committed to it properly. I've made a few videos over the past few years, but nothing that great and I guess I never stuck with it as much as I should have. So I decided to change my channel name from my nickname Moyesy to ZeroWaste30 and start again. If you would like to subscribe to my channel then you can do so here.

I thought I'd start things with a really simple video with my top 5 zero waste tips to get you started.

1. Reusable bottle

There really isn't any reason at all to be buying plastic bottles of water these days. Despite the fact that it's damaging to the environment, why spend £1 on a bottle of water when you can just drink it from your tap? It really doesn't make any sense at all. I picked up my stainless steel reusable bottle from TK Maxx a few months ago and it's the best bottle I've ever had. It keeps my water cold for 12 hours which is perfect if I'm on the go or if I'm doing some hillwalking. I've also found cafes and restaurants are more often than not happy enough to fill it up if you ask them nicely enough.

2. Tote Bag

I think this was one of the first zero waste swaps I made years ago before I ever knew what the term zero waste meant. I have quite a few ones that I carry around with me including a few from my work and my favourite vegan ones from Chiaralascura. Unfortunately the one I have is no longer available, but they do have some other awesome looking ones on their website. I picked mine up at a vegan festival in Glasgow a few years ago, but you can purchase them online too. If you don't want postage and packaging which I can't guarantee is zero waste then you'll be able to pick up other totes bags in shops a lot closer to home.

3. Shampoo bar

I swapped by shampoo bottle for a shampoo bar about six months ago and I haven't looked back since. I know there's a lot of different ones on the market and some people don't like Lush, but I've found the Seanik bar from Lush works really well for my hair. I don't need to use a conditioner with it and it lasts for a long time. I did try using a different one from Lush but it made my hair feel a bit dry, so I would shop around and find one that works for you. If you get one in Lush then they sell tins as well so they're easy to carry around.

4. Bamboo Toothbrush

I love my trusty bamboo toothbrush from Humble Brush which unlike plastic ones is biodegradable and can be recycled or put in the compost. I tend to keep hold of mine and reuse them to clean stuff with, so there's lots of different uses for them.

5. Reusable wipes

I stopped using face wipes last year, and have been using reusable ones ever since. I'm currently using some handmade ones that I made from an old pair of pyjamas. I used them with coconut oil to take off my make up (I don't wear much make up anyway) and then just throw them in the wash with my normal load. It much better and cheaper than constantly buying single use face wipes from the shops.

Comment below and let me know.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100548430195629126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665773189682253005.post-85877286260106932542018-04-25T11:41:00.002-07:002018-06-13T12:20:52.049-07:00Vegan food in York & LeedsI recently got back from a long weekend in York (with a day trip to Leeds) with my mum and my sister, and while I was there, I discovered some amazing vegan food. I only found one fully vegan restaurant (as opposed to the multiple vegan ones in Edinburgh), but lots of places had vegan options so I was never short of food. I even found a stall in York station selling brownies and vegan sausage rolls, although I'd just eaten breakfast so I wasn't hungry enough to buy any.

Here's some of my vegan food highlights from the trip.

1. Double Dutch Pancake House

I stumbled across this place from a leaflet left in our apartment, and while it's not a fully vegan café, it has lots of options for vegans. I had the Belgian pancake which was served with sliced pear, Biscoff spread and Swedish Glace ice-cream and a chocolate milkshake made with soya milk and ice-cream. I did feel pretty stuffed once I left and I would never normally eat something so sweet for breakfast, but it was delicious and a definite must if you're in York.

2. Pho

Pho is a Vietnamese street food restaurant in Leeds which has lots of healthy, fresh vegan options. There's not a Pho in Scotland so it was completely new to me, but they seem to have locations all over the UK. Vietnamese spring rolls are my absolute favourite (even though I've only had them a few times) so I had them with vermicelli rice noodles, beansprouts and some salad.
Say hello to the most delicious scone I've ever had. We arrived at Goji vegetarian café just as they were bringing out warm scones. I opted for the vegan version so it was served with coconut cream instead of butter. The café had a great menu with lots of choice for breakfast and lunch, and they had lots of huge cakes in the menu too.
4. Cosy Club

We found Cosy Club through a booklet in our apartment and since it had a separate vegan menu it was a winner. They had brunch, mains, sides and desserts on offer which isn't always the case for a non-vegan restaurant. I picked the vegetable curry which was served with rice, onion bhaji, nan bread, poppadum and mango chutney. I don't normally order a curry when I'm out, but i was drawn to it because it came with so made sides and it didn't disappoint. The décor of the restaurant was beautiful too, so you could easily have a meal and sit for a few drinks after it.

4. Ambiente Tapas

The dishes weren't marked vegan on the menu, but our waitress went through everything I could eat and other dishes that could be altered to be vegan. I picked veggie paella, patatas bravas, green beans fried in garlic and toasted bread with tomato and garlic. It was all really tasty, especially the green beans which I finished first. It might not seem like a huge amount of food, but it filled me up and it was really good value too.

I also have a vegan food blog from my recent trip to Iceland which you can read here.

If I'm honest, I probably didn't think much about what I was washing my clothes in until a couple of months ago. Aside from looking for a vegan product, I would generally just pick up whatever
washing detergent was on offer. However this zero waste journey has not only made me think about my plastic use, but it's also made me aware of all the chemicals around me.

A few months ago while browsing in my local health food store, I noticed this bag of Soapnuts or soapberries. I'd heard about them online, but this was the first time I'd found them, so I bought a bag and my washing has never been the same since.

Soapberries are actually a fruit which produces a natural soap meaning you can wash your clothes free of any chemicals, parabens or additives. They're vegan can be recycled in the compost too!

The ones I have are from Green Frog Botanic and they couldn't be easier to use. You just put a few shells into a small cotton pouch that comes with them, and you just throw it into the wash. The soapberries shells can be reused for multiple washes so they're much better value for money too. I also add a few drops of lemongrass essential oil to my wash so my clothes come out smelling good.

I was definitely a little sceptical at first, but my clothes feel great and I know that I'll never go back to using chemical filled laundry detergent ever again.

So that's my new way of washing my clothes, and I love it!

I'd really like to know in the comments below what steps you take for zero waste washing.
If you want to know what I've been up to I did a life update blog here.

I've been wanting to visit Iceland for years, so I jumped at the chance to go when Vanessa invited me along on her birthday trip. So at the end of January, myself, Vanessa, Nat, Gemma and Kevin headed off to Iceland.

We arrived on Thursday and spend the evening exploring, then got up early on Friday where our first stop was The Icelandic Phallological Museum. which is home to the largest collection of penises in the world. There's a lot of people who probably think this is a bit weird for me, especially given my love of animals but it really was the most weirdly fascinating place that I've ever seen. Here's a picture of me posing beside the penis of a sperm whale (that's certainly a sentence I never thought I would say out loud).
<span style="color: #002000; font-family: "arial";">

After the museum, we took a walk around Reykjavik before we headed for the Blue Lagoon which was the most magical place I've ever been. Despite it being such a tourist hub, they don't oversell tickets, so it doesn't ever seem that busy. We spend about 3 hours in there - we had a drink, did a few face masks, enjoyed the steam room, and felt very, very relaxed.
I feel like everyone else loved the Geysir but me. I don't know if it was the fact that it didn't look as effective in the snow or because there was literally 100 tourists standing around it with their cameras out waiting to take photos, but I didn't love it. In fact, I actually enjoyed the gift shop more than actually natural wonder.
My favourite place on the route was Gullfoss Waterfall. I don't think I've ever seen anything so spectacular in my life. Due to the winter conditions, there was a gate preventing us from going closer to it, but everyone seemed to be ignoring it and just climbing over the gate anyway. The path was completely covered in ice, so I obviously fell over but it was worth it for the view you got when you reached the top. I mean just look at how amazing that view is...
On our final day, we decided to spend it in Reykjavik before we had to head back to the airport. First stop, was a really cool flea market before we split up for lunch and shopping. I went to a vegan drive thru which was really cool (my review is here if you want to read it) and then picked up some souvenirs to take back home for my family.

I feel like it's been a while since I blogged, so I thought I should do a bit of a life update.

Life has been really hectic lately and something had to give. Unfortunately for anyone who reads this blog, this is the thing that has had to take a back seat. But I'm back now, and have plans for lots of great content (well I think it's great anyway) over the next few months.

So what have I actually been up to?

Well firstly, work has been really busy since the start of the year. If you don't already know I work as a Campaigner and Press Officer for OneKind and I've spent the past couple of months organising a huge fox hunting march through Edinburgh which is taking place in just over two weeks' time. Over 700 people have signed up to attend and 1.7k are interested on Facebook, so it looks like it's going to be a great event. I've been doing everything from finding a band to ordering signs and meeting with the council. Today, I even filmed a video to go on a giant screen that'll drive around Edinburgh on the day. If you're in Edinburgh on Saturday 24th March then you should check out OneKind's website for more details and come along and join us.

I've started doing some volunteer social media and blogging work for Plastic Free Scotland - a group campaigning to end single use plastics in supermarkets. You can follow us on Twitter here and Facebook here. I also did an interview with Planet Problems about our campaigns and the problem with plastic when you can read here if you're interested.

I'm still reviewing theatre shows for All Edinburgh Theatre too. I saw The Sound of Music a couple of weeks ago and it was AMAZING. I've no idea how it's taken me until the age of 31 to see The Sound of Music but I loved it to pieces. I gave it a 4 star review which probably would have been 5 had one of the actors not been a bit wooden, but it was still one of the best shows I've seen in a really long time.

I guess you could say the rest of my time has been spent falling in love with the most wonderful human being. He's kind and funny and caring, and he loves Jurassic Park just as much as I do. I don't tend to talk about the side of my life too much, but it's the best relationship I've ever been in and I feel incredibly lucky to have met him.

I plan to get back to blogging regularly from now on, so keep your eyes peeled for more posts over the coming weeks.

So until then...

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">LA, July 2013<span style="font-family: "calibri";">

Today is World Cancer Day. It’s an international day to
raise awareness of cancer and encourage its prevention, detection, and
treatment. Since it’s such an important day, I wanted to share the story of my
hero who bravely battled cancer when he was just 11 years old.

It’s been 10 years now, but I still remember it like it was
yesterday. The smell of the ward, the broken parents, and the sick children
clinging onto life with all their strength.

My brother had been unwell for a while before he was
admitted to hospital in Glasgow. My parents had taken him to the GP, and because he was
short of breath, he was handed an inhaler and sent on his way.

At first, we had no reason at all to question it. Why would
we? The doctor said he had asthma so we assumed that was the correct diagnosis.
It wasn’t until a few days before he was taken into hospital that we knew
something was really wrong. I remember him being really upset because he didn’t
feel well, but he couldn’t explain what was actually wrong.

A few days after that we were told he had non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma.

Not only did he have cancer, but he had a tumour the size of
a large grapefruit in his chest. The shortness of breath that the GP thought
was asthma was a tumour that had been pushing against his lungs for months.

This was the moment our whole world fell apart. I can’t put
into words how it felt when we were given his diagnosis. It was the worst day
of my entire life, and nothing has come close that feeling since.

I remember meeting my dad outside the hospital so he could
take me up to my brother’s ward. He gave me a hug and broke down. It was the
first time I had ever seen him cry and it was heartbreaking. Once we got up to
his ward, it took me over an hour to stop crying before I was able to pull
myself together enough to be able to go into his room.

The next 12 months went by in a blur. That’s right; he was
in hospital for a full year. Despite the size of his tumour, the cancer wasn’t
terminal and it didn’t spread. I guess you could say we were lucky, if it’s
possible to ever be lucky in that situation. That doesn’t mean it was an easy
ride though. Chemotherapy is horrible, and I can’t explain what it’s like to watch
your little brother go through it.

My brother had all the usual side effects, but there were
some I wasn’t prepared for. He was unable to eat so had to be fed through a
tube in his nose, and soon became unable to walk which meant he spent a year doing physiotherapy when he left hospital so he could learn to walk again.

The toughest time came about eight months into his treatment
when he spent a few weeks on a ventilator in intensive care due to an
infection. There was a staff member at his beside the entire time while he was
hooked up to every machine possible. All we could do was sit at his bedside and
hold his hand hoping that his body would be able to fight the infection enough
for him to wake up.

Despite all the bad days, we did have a few good ones too. I
remember seeing him smile for the first time in weeks when some Stormtroopers
came into his ward, and on another occasion when we convinced TGI Friday’s to
give us a takeaway of his favourite meal because he wasn’t able to leave the
hospital. My 22nd birthday also fell between his courses of
chemotherapy so he was feeling well enough to come home for a few days which
was the best birthday present I could ever have asked for.

I still get asked how I coped a lot. The truth is, I didn’t really
cope at all. I would pull myself together whenever I was at the hospital using
every last bit of energy to fight back to tears, just so he wouldn’t see me
cry. Then I would go home and cry myself to sleep night after night.

As horrible as it was for me, it
was nothing compared to what he went through. I can’t even begin to imagine how
I would cope with cancer now at the age of 31, let alone with I was an 11 year
old child. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words just how much he
went through, and how brave he was. It’s the kind of thing I wouldn’t even wish
on my worst enemy, so just imagine how hard it is to watch someone you love go
through it.

One thing I struggled with a lot
was feeling guilty. I was the big sister and it was my job to protect him from
the big bad world outside. I was 21 years old and completely healthy, and I
would have swapped places with him in a heartbeat if I could have.

It might have seemed like we were stuck in a never-ending
nightmare at times, but I’m pleased to tell you that this story has a happy ending.
After a year in hospital, he went back to school and this summer he will be graduating
from university!!! I don’t think any of my family will ever quite get over what
happened, but seeing how far my brother has come definitely helps us all to
move on.

So this World Cancer Day I want to pay tribute to my amazing
brother. It’s true what they say, not all heroes wear capes. Mine beat cancer
and he’s the only hero I need.

As it turns out, there are lots of great options.

In a bid to save some cash (because Iceland is VERY expensive) we did eat quite a few meals in our apartment. I took oats with me for porridge an<span style="font-family: "arial";">d found some strawberries and syrup at the local shop, and we made a giant pot of veggie pasta which lasted us two nights. However, when I did eat out I discovered some really tasty food.

The first place I found was Kaffi Vinyl which is a completely vegan bar/café and record store right in the centre of Reykjavik. There were lots of options on the menu including salads, sandwiches, pasta, and a burger. They also had cocktails and a selection of delicious looking cakes on the counter.

I had the Mile High Club sandwich which was filled with tomato, portobello bacon, avocado, lettuce, garlic aioli, dijon mustard, crispy fried onions, melted cheese and the biggest pile of crisps I've ever seen. It was really tasty, even if I couldn't quite manage to finish all the crisps on the plate.

The second place I tried was a fast food restaurant called Aktu Taktu which I had read about online. It's like McDonalds but a lot better. They have a selection of burgers on the menu including a vegan one which consists of a soya patty with cheese, salad and sauce.

I've never had an actual meat burger before, so it was a strange experience to even order a burger in a fast food restaurant, but I really enjoyed it. I also saw another girl come in after me and order the vegan burger too.It would be nice if there was another option on the menu, but it was much pretty than you would get in similar places in the UK.

So that was my vegan experience in Iceland. Have you ever been? I'd love to know your recommendations as I'm planning to go back sometime soon.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100548430195629126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665773189682253005.post-79864305419727343012018-01-14T03:09:00.001-08:002018-01-14T03:13:21.604-08:00Birthday CelebrationsSo that's it, I am officially 31 (and still completely in denial about it).

This week, I celebrated another birthday and while I don't look any older (well, that's what I'm telling myself) I have now reached the grand old age of 31.

I took the day off work like I have done every year of my adult life (well apart from one year when an old boss made me work) so my mum came through to Edinburgh so we could spend the day together.

Ever since I was born, my mum has made my birthday cakes and they always taste a million times better than any shop bought cake. This year, she made me a vegan chocolate dinosaur cake and it was amazing!! She even used Biscoff spread (!!!) between the layers. I've been eating it every day this week, and luckily there's still some left to snack on today.

We spent the afternoon at Holyrood Palace and the Queen's Gallery, which we've both been wanting to go to for a while, especially since I've become obsessed with The Crown. You're not allowed to take any photos inside, but here's one of me in my favourite Gryffindor scarf standing in the remains of Holyrood Abbey.

After that, we took a way up the Royal Mile for my birthday lunch at Paradise Palms. It's a great veggie/vegan bar and restaurant in town which is decorated with neon lights and palm trees. I had nachos topped with 3 bean chili, kiwi salsa verde, guacamole, blackbean dip, pickled chillies and vegan cheese. We also had a portion of the buffalo cauliflower, but it was a little too spicy for both of us.

I was back in work on Wednesday and of my colleagues made me a vegan chocolate cake which the office all enjoyed. I also caught up with some friends, went for pizza, played pinball, and then spent some time with the rest of my family as my brother turned 21 this week too.

I guess turning 31 wasn't too bad after all!

Happy Veganniversary to me!! That's right, today is officially my veganniversary. I'm sure to some people it's a pointless day that doesn't mean anything, but to me it marks a completely new chapter of my life filled with compassion, love, good health and great friends. Plus, I'm not married or anything so right now this is the only real anniversary I have to celebrate, so I am taking it.

If I'm completely honest, until about a week ago I was convinced that I had been vegan for five years but as it turns out it's only been four years. My journey to veganism was pretty easy. I stopped eating meat when I was around 12 or 13 years old (fun fact: no one can remember exactly when I gave up meat, just that my mum made my eat the rest of the chicken in our freezer before I could stop eating it), and I have never drank cow's milk or really eaten eggs. I occasionally ate scrambled eggs and I guess I consumed eggs in cakes, but I've never had a fried/boiled/poached egg. I've also never eaten a steak, a burger, bucket of chicken, or any kind of meat joint. I guess you could say I was always destined to become vegan at some point.

It wasn't until late 2013 that I actually became aware of how terrible the dairy industry is. I always thought that dairy cows were better off because they aren't being slaughtered in the same way that meat cows are, but actually they have a horrific time. Their life revolves around being artificially inseminated over and over again, while their young are taken from them as soon as they're born. I discovered this at the end of 2013, did veganuary in 2014, and I have never looked back.

I still can't quite believe how much veganism has grown in the past few years. The Fish & Chip shop in my hometown of Polmont now has a vegan night (Polmont is a tiny village so this is AMAZING - check it out here), most chain restaurants have vegan options including Pizza Hut which now does vegan cheese, and Ben & Jerry's even brought out some non-dairy ice-cream last year. If you're worried that veganism may be restrictive, then just check out some of the food I ate in the last twelves months.

If you're thinking about transitioning to a lifestyle free of animal products then you can sign up to veganuary here. It's a great way to get a taster of veganism without having to commit to it for life, although I do think once you tried it you'll never look back.
I can't believe it's 2018 already. It feels like the last twelve months just flew by in the blink of an eye, and now we're back at the beginning of a brand new year.

Personally, 2017 was a pretty great year. I turned 30 which I might not have liked much at the time, but I feel a lot more settled in my thirties now, even if I'm still in denial about it. Other highlights of the year include:

Making some great new friends (A special shout out goes to Nicole who has become my best vegan hillwalking buddy).

Climbing more Munros, some of which gave me sunburn and others were so windy I could barely stand at the top.

Visiting Copenhagen for the second time and getting to watch Bon Iver live despite getting caught in the worst rain of the year at the festival.

Writing, Writing, Writing! I started reviewing theatre shows for All Edinburgh Theatre which gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in the Fringe for the first time in years. I also wrote blogs for work and Huffington Post.

And finally, I met someone in the summer who unexpectedly turned the later half of this year into the best yet.

My plan for 2018 is to make more time for the things I love which for me is all about friends, family, travel, writing, reading, hillwalking and eating all vegan food.

Here's to making 2018 the best year yet!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100548430195629126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665773189682253005.post-25069218832449858152017-12-17T07:37:00.001-08:002017-12-17T07:45:52.597-08:00Vegan Christmas Meet Up - Herbivore Kitchen

Last night, I had the pleasure of going out for a three course Christmas dinner with some lovely vegan bloggers at The Herbivore Kitchen in Edinburgh. I got to put faces of people I've followed online for a while, and made some new friends in the process.

If you're used to being the only vegan on a night out then your options can often be limited. I've been to many events and nights out over the years where I've been served fruit salad on a plate for a starter and the same fruit salad in a glass for dessert. Luckily, last night we were treated to a wonderful menu that had multiple vegan options on offer for each course!

To begin with I had roast butternut round, sweet potato gnocchi and sage cashew cream. It was so delicious that I'm pretty sure I cleared my plate in about 2 minute flat.

For my main course, I went for wintry beetroot risotto which was also delicious. Most people picked the nut roast, but I wasn't 100% sure I would like it, so I thought this was a safer bet. It was really filling so I ended up leaving a bit of it, but I would happily eat it again for dinner tonight if I could.

My favourite course of the night was always going to be pudding which was a chocolate yule arctic roll. It tastes just like a Terry's chocolate orange which I have eaten for almost five years, so it was hard for it not to be my favourite of the three courses. However, everything I ate at the meal was really tasty and I would happily eat it all again.
We also got a surprise goodie bag filled with lots of vegan treats including cakes, chocolate and shower gel which I will do a separate post on next week when I start tasting everything that was in it.

It was a great dinner with some genuinely lovely people, and I can't wait for the next time we all get together for more tasty vegan food.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100548430195629126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665773189682253005.post-81474043811416803212017-12-03T10:31:00.002-08:002017-12-03T10:41:33.069-08:00Edinburgh's newest supper clubSupper clubs seem to be the thing of the moment, and Edinburgh's newest one certainly doesn't disappoint.

Last night, I went to Century General's first ever supper club with a group of colleagues and friends from OneKind. We've become regulars at Century General over the past few months thanks to their coffee (I'm still not a coffee drinker, but I hear it's very good) and giant vegan cinnamon buns. So when we heard the first Century General Supper was going to be vegan, we knew we had to go.

For the first course, we had a delicious beremeal bannock with white bean and roast garlic puree. If you're not familiar with a beremeal bannock (which I wasn't), it's bread made using an ancient grain from Shetland. It's something I've never had before, but I'd definitely recommend it if you ever come across it because it's really tasty.

The next course was salt baked vegetables, salsa verde and candied hazelnuts. I'm not really a fan of nuts, so I did pass on the candied hazelnuts, but the rest of the dish was really good. Judging by all the empty plates around me, it seems like everyone else really enjoyed it too.

After that, we had my favourite course savoury course of the night which was braised lentils, neep gnocchi, leeks and jus. I've never had gnocchi made with anything other than potato before, but this neep gnocchi was delicious.

It wouldn't be any kind of supper without dessert and for this course we had chocolate tart, coconut ice cream, apples and pears. I pretty much inhaled this dish the minute it was put down in front of me, and I could have easily had seconds. It was the perfect finish to a fantastic evening of food. We also had bowls of cabbage on the table for us all to share which complimented the dish really well too.

To go with each course, we were given beers from Tempest Brewery. I've never been the biggest beer fan but I would definitely have two of the four beers again, especially the Mango Berlinner which turned out to be one of the best beers I've ever tasted.

We were also given a couple of samples from Fife based natural company called Bodylushious to try. I got rose and lavender soap and jasmine body butter. They smell so good, so I'll do a full review once I've had a chance to try them out.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the first ever Century General Supper went really well, and I can't wait to see if they do another vegan one in the future.
It’s that time of year again when we all huddle around our television to watch some celebrities we’ve probably never heard of tucking into a kangaroo penis or swimming through a tank with a crocodile that’s had its mouth taped shut.

A couple of weekends ago, I found myself at The Caffeine Drip in Edinburgh for the first time. I'd heard lots of great things about this South African café and bakery, but for some reason I've just never found myself at that part of town, even though isn't really that far away from my flat.

It isn't a vegan café, but they have so many different vegan options that you wouldn't be disappointed. I was there around 1.30pm so I was unable to order of the breakfast menu but if you go early enough you can pick from vegan French toast or a tofu scramble with added sides of vegan bacon or haggis.

On the recommendation of my friend, I ordered the vegan club sandwich which came with grilled vegetables, caramelised onion hummus, tomatoes, avocado and spinach. I also had it with rustic fries because I'm never going to turn down the chance to have chips. I think I'd have to put it up there in my top 5 favourite sandwiches of all time (that's right, I have a list) but it hasn't taken the top spot with goes to Meatless Mike sandwich from Ike's in San Francisco.

They also have a variety of vegan burgers, sandwiches and wraps and the most incredible vegan hot chocolate I have ever tasted. One thing to keep in mind is that it can be really busy so you might not get a table straight away, but it's definitely worth waiting on one if it's crowded.

You can check out the full menu on their website here.

Are these not the best cookie sandwiches you've ever seen?

They're from a cute little bakery called SugarDaddy's in Edinburgh. Despite only living about a 20 minute walk from the shop, I only actually went in for the first time this weekend.

It's not a vegan bakery, but they have lots of different vegan options available and everything is gluten free. I obviously picked up one of the caramel apple cookie sandwiches which tasted incredible, and it was only £1.95! That's a bargain in terms of vegan cakes because they're usually at least twice as much if you're after cakes at a vegan festival.

They also do doughnuts, cupcakes, brownies and cookies, so there are more than enough options to keep you going back time after time. I fee like it's going to be hard not to end up there every day working my way through all the different cakes. Although that probably won't be good for my waistline even if my taste buds will enjoy it an awful lot.

If you're in Edinburgh and looking for vegan cakes then I can't recommend SugarDady's enough. Trust me, you'll love it!

I've been using reusable shopper bags like this one for years, long before I had even knew what zero waste meant.

In Scotland, there's been a 5p charge on single-use plastic carrier bags since 2014, but even before then I carried around one of these shoppers. I've had a fair few over the years but this green one is my current favourite. I picked it up from Chiaralascura at a vegan festival last year. It's really thick material and has a clasp on it to keep it closed. I would estimate that I probably carry this bag around pretty much every single day without fail. It's always in the bottom of whatever bag I'm using just in case I need to pick up some shopping.

If you're trying to cut down on plastic or take some steps to becoming zero waste then this is probably one of the easiest things you can do. Plus, if you like in the UK then it's going to save you money in the long run if you keep having to purchase single use carrier bags.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100548430195629126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665773189682253005.post-80507620659097491672017-10-27T13:07:00.000-07:002018-05-09T13:54:19.559-07:00Zero Waste Periods

Let's face it, no one likes getting their period. I am currently sitting on my sofa with a hot water bottle on my stomach because of cramps and I'm not exactly thrilled by it.

However, we (women) all get periods so we need to think about what products we want to use. I'm lucky because I get light periods due to the birth control I use (it's a UID if anyone is interested).

I read something a few weeks ago about how the average sanitary pad contains the equivalent of four plastic bags. We've become a nation who are trying to cut down on our plastic bag use, yet women are using lots of plastic each month without even thinking about it. Then there's tampons which come with plastic applicators, the name alone tells you they aren't good for the environment.

So what options do we have?

I know quite a few people who swear by the menstrual cup. I have tried one, but it just wasn't for me. I'm sure it probably takes a while to get used to. I just didn't have the patience and found it all a bit awkward.

So I decided that I would try reusable menstrual pads which I bought from this great shop on Etsy here. They're really comfortable, soft, and they look so much more fun than regular disposable pads. Plus, while each pad costs a few pounds to buy you'll be saving money in the long run and really cutting down your plastic use.

So how do you wash them?

I just soak them in some cold water and then throw them in the washing machine with my regular washing. Once the wash is done, I just hang them up to try and they're good to go again.

If you haven't thought about how much plastic you use each month for your period, then I recommend that you do. There's a few different options on the market which will not only save you money but will also dramatically cut down the amount of plastic you. I'd also love to know what products and companies you're using in the comments.

Guess who made her own almond milk at the weekend?

I had wanted to make it for a while, but I kept putting it off. I thought it would be really difficult, but in actual fact it's really simple. So here's my step by step guide to making your own almond milk.

1. Soak 2 cups of almonds overnight or for at least 8 hours. Place the almonds in a bowl and cover with an inch of water. The longer you soak the almonds, the creamier the almond milk will be.

2. Drain and rinse the almonds. Use cold water to rinse the almonds which should be quite soft if you pinch them.

3. Blend almonds and water. Put the almonds in the blender with 4 cups of water and blend until the almonds are broken down.

4. Strain the almonds. Pour the mixture into a nut milk bag (I use this one from Lovetree products) and squeeze or twist the bag until the liquid comes through the bag and you're just left with the almond meal.

5. Refrigerate the almond milk. Store the milk in a air tight container. It usually last between 2-3 days.

If you like your almond milk sweeter then you can pick a sweetener of your choice, but I usually only use my almond milk in porridge so I don't need it to be very sweet because whatever porridge toppings I use will do that for me.

There's also lots you can do with the almond meal whether it be adding it to energy balls, nut bars or smoothies. I just put mine in the fridge for now until I decide what to do with it, but I'll write another post about it when I make my mind up.

Most plant based milks come in either plastic bottles or cartons with plastic tops, so making your own is a great way to cut down on your waste while also cutting out any additives that can sometimes be added to it.

Have you ever made your own non-dairy milk before? I'd love to hear your recipes. A couple of weeks ago, I was sent two boxes full of Good Full Stop bars. I've been meaning to post about them before now, but with work being busy and spending a week in bed sick, I've have a backlog of half written posts that I needed to finish.

If you've been to a vegan festival before then chances are you may already tried one of these bars. I tried a couple at a festival in Edinburgh, but now there's 9 different flavours to try.

The flavours are:

Cherry Sweet and Cherry Good (Cherry & Maple)

Sun Kissed and Good (Choc & Orange)

Chocolate is Twice as Good (Double Choc)

Very Nutty and Very Good (Mixed Nuts)

Berry Berry Good (Raspberry)

Cool, Minty and Good (Choc & Mint)

Full of Beans and so Good (Mocha & Caffeine)

Devilishly Hot and Red Hot and Very Good (Double Choc & Chilli and Fiery Choc & Chilli)

I have a big sweet tooth, so my favourite has to be the Double Choc one, but Choc & Orange comes in a very close second place. I'll admit that I've never been a fan of cherry or coffee, so I gave those ones to my mum who loved both of them.

One of the best things about these bars is that they're really tasty. Sometimes I find fruit and nut bars a bit tasteless, but these ones are packed with flavour. They're also gluten-free, vegan, and all but one of the flavours counts as one of your five-a-day!
